Marvin is a lawyer, recalled emergency retired judge, mediator and arbiter. He practiced law in Western North Carolina from 1973 to 2001. He served as a District Court Judge in Buncombe County from 2001 to 2010 and a Superior Court Judge from 2010 to 2021. After his retirement from the bench in 2021, the Chief Justice appointed him as a Recalled Emergency Superior Court Judge. He is assigned to work as a judge in Superior Court cases on an as needed basis.
In 2021, he partnered with Becky to form Pope & Knight Mediation and he is available to mediate cases pending in the courts and private matters. Marvin is a certified mediator for Superior Court cases with the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
